Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
