Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
