No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
