Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
